Magnetic fabrics theory
While concepts of magnetic fabrics date back to Graham (1954), substantial advances have been made in magnetic instrumentation and theoretical breakthroughs.
I enjoy contributing to these advances in two aspects of magnetic fabrics:
- theoretical models of intermediate and inverse magnetic fabrics
- separation of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic anisotropies
When a rock contains two minerals carrying respectively a normal and inverse fabric, the magnetic parameters do not follow simple linear mixing laws but instead exhibit abrupt changes at critical thresholds (Ferré, 2002)
In rocks that contain both paramagnetic and ferromagnetic minerals, the difference in fabric can be used to infer shear sense of deformed rocks (Ferré et al., 2004; Martìn-Hernández and Ferré, 2007).
